Disability Sport & Recreation, in partnership with the Australian Physiotherapy Association produce an annual webinar, as part of the APA member value webinar series.
The webinar topic changes each year, based on your feedback, putting a spotlight on various aspects of disability sport and recreation to meet learning outcomes.
Content is based on current trends, research, and events, so you can keep up to date with all new developments in the world of disability sport and recreation. Past topics included discussions with key players, therapists and academics talking about the benefits and the barriers for both the individual and their therapist; the value of community partnerships; adaptive equipment, motivation and more.
The webinar earns Australian registered physiotherapists one hour of CPD points.

Hosted by Keren Faulkner, Manager of the Specialist Performance Services of the Australian Sports Commission, From Rehab to Rio features Melissa Nolan, APA Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapist, double Paralympic gold medallist Jason Lees, and VIS strength and conditioning coach, Corey Innes.
The webinar illustrates the complete journey from theory to practice so physiotherapists can better support their clients to engage in competitive or recreational sport.
From the clinician’s perspective, the webinar covers:
- the benefits and barriers to sport for clients with disability
- an overview of the Paralympic pathway and classification processes
- clinical conditions and selecting a suitable sport
- clinical considerations for your client engaging in sport
- From the athlete’s perspective, learn:
- how a para-athlete trains
- adaptations to gym exercises for strength, and function
- considerations when programming for an athlete with disability

2016 – Professional development webinar, From Rehab to Rio. Meet the players…

Keren Faulkner
Keren Faulkner is a fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists with a specialty in Sports Physio. She worked for the Australian Institute of Sport and attended the Olympic Games in Athens and Beijing in support of the Australian Gymnastics team. She is a past President of Sports Physiotherapy Australia and has served on the Australian Commonwealth Games medical commission. Since 2010 Keren has worked with the Australian Paralympic Committee, first as Physical Therapies manager and more recently as Manager, Performance Services. Keren’s first Paralympic Games experience was in London in 2012 and she worked with a great team of Performance Service providers to support our Australian team in Rio in September this year.

Melissa Nolan
Melissa is an APA Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapist, and has a passion for sports physiotherapy and working with para-athletes. Melissa is the physiotherapist for the Australian Para-Canoe Program, and has been the team physiotherapist for three international tours with the Australian Para-Canoe team for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 World Championships. In 2013 Melissa was part of the medical team for the Australian Para-Athletics team for World Championships, and she is also a national Para-Cycling classifier.

Cory Innes
Cory has studied a Bachelor of Physical Education and has a Master of Exercise Science in strength and conditioning. Cory has worked as a Strength and Conditioning Coach at the Victorian Institute of Sport since 2014. His role involves overseeing individual scholarships, diving, track and field and badminton athletes.

Jason Lees
Jason Lees is a member of the national wheelchair rugby team since 2009. Jason acquired a spinal cord injury following an accident in 2000. In 2002, Jason started playing wheelchair rugby on the social, non-competitive level. Jason has played for the National team at a competitive level since 2009. In wheelchair rugby, Jason has won gold at the 2012 London Paralympic Games, gold at the 2014 International Wheelchair Rugby World Championships in Denmark, and gold at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. Jason works as the Wheelchair Rugby co-ordinator at Disability Sport & Recreation.
