2024 Victorian Protect Wheelchair Rugby Competition

 ROUND 6: MONDAY 9, SEPTEMBER Recap

As we reach the halfway point of the Victorian Wheelchair Rugby League season with Round 6, Box Hill leads the standings, with 2nd place Harlequins and 3rd place Powerhouse separated only by percentage.


🏉 Game 1 – Box Hill defeated Harlequins 26-24


Harlequins started strong, with Kadi Faki’s consistent scoring giving them an early lead. The middle stages saw an exciting back-and-forth exchange of tries from both sides. However, in the closing moments, Box Hill hit their stride, with every player contributing to several assists, leading to a flurry of tries by Ben Owens. Their collective efforts secured a well-earned victory for the experienced Box Hill squad.


🏉 Game 2 – Harlequins defeated Power House 27-25


The second game of the night mirrored the first in its intensity, with both teams locked in a tight contest and neither willing to back down. Power House pulled ahead going into the final quarter, but Harlequins mounted a late surge, securing a comeback victory and applying the lessons learned from the earlier match. Tries were evenly distributed on both sides, with every player making significant contributions to the team effort.

ROUND 4: MONDAY 26, AUGUST and ROUND 5: MONDAY 2, SEPTEMBER Recaps:

Round 5 was held at The Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre and provided a unique opportunity for patients to experience the excitement of Wheelchair Rugby amid the Paralympic buzz. Due to player availability, Rounds 4 and 5 were played as practice matches, with the number of available players determining the winning team.


ROUND 3: MONDAY 19, AUGUST Recap


🏉 Game 1 – Power House defeated Harlequins 31-23

 

A quick start from Power House set the tone for the match early, taking a five try lead into quarter time. The remaining quarters were closely contested with Power House extending their lead by singular tries at each interval. Dylan Streller, along with Brydee Moore, played a pivotal role in maintaining the lead for Power House, securing their first win of the season.

 

🏉 Game 2 – Box Hill defeated Harlequins 31-24

 

The night's second match got off to a rapid start, with both teams trading scores right from the opening whistle. By the end of the first quarter, neither side had gained the upper hand, leaving the score level at 8-8.

Anthony Gray played a key role for Box Hill, helping them take a narrow lead into halftime. The second half was fiercely contested, with both teams exchanging tries in a thrilling back-and-forth battle. In the end, Box Hill pulled ahead, clinching the victory late with a series of tries from Ben Owens.


ROUND 2: MONDAY 12, AUGUST Recap


🏉 Game 1 – Harlequins defeated Box Hill 32-22

In a similar fashion to the opening round, Box Hill began Round 2 of the season in fast style through Antonio Vecchio’s creative play. Harlequins worked themselves into the game well to wrestle back an early margin and were sitting one try down at 11-12 come the halftime break. Cooper Blackwood was dominant in the second half with a handful of tries to help Harlequins take ascendancy and come away with a nice win on the back of a brilliant team second half.

🏉 Game 2 – Box Hill defeated Power House 31-27

The match-fit Box Hill team were quick to begin and take control of the contest with multiple team scorers giving them an early lead. Power House took some time to get their connection with the ball going, but once they did, they looked dangerous going forward with strong blocks from Jacob Walsh setting up scoring opportunities for Kadi Faki. The comeback was on in the second half for Power House, managing to win the second half, but it wouldn’t be enough to bridge the gap against the experienced Box Hill side, who capitalised on some late chances to end up with a four-try victory.


ROUND 1: MONDAY 5, AUGUST Recap


The first round of the 2024 Victorian Protect Wheelchair Rugby Cup kicked off at the Hangar in Essendon on Monday night. The athletes quickly got back into the swing of things, showcasing their skills in two exciting games.

 

🏉 Game 1 – Box Hill defeated Power House 32 – 13

 

Box Hill began the match with a rapid start, scoring the first three tries within minutes. It took Power House some time to warm up, but once they got going, they looked dangerous going forward, led by Andrew Harrison. In his debut game, Jacob Walsh provided strong midfield blocks that steadied Box Hill's momentum and kept Power House ticking in the second quarter. Box Hill continued to score well in the second half, with Ben Owens who was influential all game, leading the charge. Marty Ford was impressive on debut, scoring three goals in the last quarter to keep Power House in the game until the very end but Box Hill pulled away late to secure the first win of the 2024 season.

🏉  Game 2 – Harlequins defeated Power House 27-23

 

The second game of the night, and the season opener for the Harlequins, was a close contest that throughout all four quarters. Justin Goh immediately made his mark for the Harlequins with his speedy play, setting an exciting tone from the start. Shae Graham was also outstanding, particularly in the early stages, delivering great passes and blocks to keep the match competitive. The second and third quarters were a back-and-forth battle, showcasing exceptional consistency among all players. In the fourth quarter, Jacob Walsh brought Power House level with a spectacular try, one of the best of the night.
