Alexandra Ash, Acting General Manager Recreation at YMCA Victoria, was elected Chair of the Disability Sport & Recreation (DSR) board at the annual general meeting in November 2017. Ms Ash is the first female Chair to be elected to the organisation’s board.
Ms Ash joined YMCA Victoria in 2009. During her tenure at Victoria’s largest and most experienced leisure facility manager, she has held several leadership roles, giving her a deep understanding of the complexities of the active recreation landscape as well as the not-for-profit sector.
Ms Ash said with the significant changes to service delivery as a consequence of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), strong leadership was critical for the disability sector.
“It’s vital that during this transition from a long-established business model to a new way of operating under the NDIS, peak bodies like DSR continue to be active, visible and relevant.
“More than ever, there is a need for strong governance and leadership within disability, as people learn how to navigate a new system and service providers respond to new market forces.
“As the new Chair, it is my intent to ensure DSR is a sustainable peak body that is valued by multiple levels of government, and a central point for Victorians with disability to receive meaningful, accurate advice and support on how to lead their best life,” she said.
